Mercado De Mariscos or The Fish Market is located on the Cinta Costera in Panama City. In my opinion the best time to visit is early Sunday mornings between the hours of 7:30 – 8:30 as there is less traffic and seemingly fresher catch coming in. It is best to wear jeans and sneakers or clothes that you wont mind getting messy. The Fish Mongers are usually busy transporting bins and buckets of fish, scaling, cleaning fish etc.
You can also pick up a few spices, limes, lemons, peppers and a ground provisions
The fish to the bottom left of this photo is the Corvina which is similar to Sea Bass. Corvina is great tasting when properly seasoned battered and fried, but most seem to use it for ceviche. See fried Ceviche recipe using Corvina
SCENES FROM THE FISH MARKET IN PANAMA CITY
There is a wide variety of seafood available here in Panama. In the second image from left to right we have the Snapper which is known as Pargo here, next is the Spiny Lobsters and yes they are like jumbo langostinos/prawns and last but not least Mahi Mahi.
Other seafood you can find are Sea Crabs, Shark or Shark Fin (if you are into that), various types of lobsters- Moreton Bay Bugs, Clams Oyster, Mussels, Eel to name a few.
COST OF SEAFOOD IN PANAMA CITY FISH MARKET
I must add that with all the exotic seafood that one can find at the Mercado De Marsicos the prices are surprisingly affordable and in some cases extremely low.
RESTAURANTS AT PANAMA CITY FISH MARKET
There are a few humble outdoor restaurants located in and around the fish market. One of our family favorite is Econo Fish which is located to the far side of the fish market with views of the ocean. It is best to be there round about 10 o’clock as it get very busy round about 11 o’clock. The food is done to order and the service is great. While you enjoy your meal you can watch folks skateboarding, cycling, jogging or just watch the birds.
